mountains of Banff

It was a hot, dry, summer in Western Canada, and as a result there were a lot of forest fires.  Prior to our camping trip to Banff in August, it had been so smoky that the highway between Banff, and Radium, British Columbia had been closed.  We camped for four days and had spectacular weather for three of those days.

sunset is my favourite time of day

Three for three!  This is the third year I’ve been to Elk Island National Park in the last five years on my annual camping trip with my parents. The sunsets here are beautiful. We stayed two nights this year – the first night it rained, and the second night, well, this was the view….

Prince Albert National Park Sunset

Waskesiu Lake sunset at Prince Albert National Park….my favourite part of camping in the park was listening to the sounds of loons calling in the distance.  If you look at this picture long enough, you just might be able to hear their distinctive and haunting song.

Saskatchewan is more than just endless miles of prairie landscapes, we have beautiful lakes and forests and rivers, too!

Made me think of how many National Parks I’ve visited in Western Canada, so here’s my list: Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan, Banff, Jasper, Waterton, and Elk Island National Parks in Alberta, Kootenay, Glacier and Yoho National Parks in British Columbia, and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on Vancouver Island. I’d love to visit more, in particular, Gwaii Haanas and Gulf Islands off the coast of British Columbia, and Gros Morne in Newfoundland.  Never a bad thing to have travel goals!
